Grammy winner k.d. lang performs Friday at the Moncton Coliseum

k.d. lang was born in Edmonton, Alta., but this week you'll be able to find her right at home here in Moncton.

k.d. takes the stage at the Moncton Coliseum this Friday, and on stage is where the critically acclaimed singer-songwriter feels most at home.

"Playing music is one of the greatest things on Earth to me," she told The Times & Transcript.

"It's where I feel most comfortable. It's where I feel like I'm actually serving my purpose and doing my duty."

k.d. is currently on tour for Watershed, her most recent album. The tour takes her across the eastern U.S. and eastern Canada, including dates in Moncton, Halifax, Glace Bay and St. John's.

It's the first time k.d. has been in these parts for many years. She recalls a Moncton show in the mid-1980s, but admits she doesn't remember much about her time here during that early part of her career.

This time around, she'll get a little more of a Maritime experience when Meaghan Smith joins her on the tour. While she is originally from Ontario, Meaghan moved to Nova Scotia several years ago to go to school and now she lives there with her husband.

Meaghan released an EP, The Cricket's Quartet, last year and her debut full-length release comes out in the summer.

"She's really got a beautiful little voice, and there's a nice feel to her music," k.d. says of the young singer.

While Meaghan is just starting out in her career, k.d. has over two decades of recording and touring under her belt.

In 1985, she was named the Most Promising Female Vocalist by the Juno Awards after releasing two albums with k.d. lang and the Reclines.
